The life and times of Lilian Cooper

A research project with startling consequences

Lilian Cooper, 1891. I've never seen this photo before in any of the books, and was so excited when I found it. She looks so young. She doesn't know that life has an amazing journey in store for her. From the TASMANIAN SOCIAL ITEMS. (1891, July 18). Illustrated Sydney News (NSW : 1853 - 1872), p.

One of the more exciting finds of my research - a portrait of Lilian Cooper, 1891. Illustrated Sydney News.

"...in a place no further away than Brisbane...few doctors have a larger practice than the first woman doctor who went there. Also, in the Brisbane General Hospital, there have been patients who, after they have been attended by the one woman doctor they have had there, refused to be attended by anyone else. ["The Sydney Morning Herald, 1906]

The quote above is just one of many that demonstrates Dr Lilian Cooper's close relationship with the people of Brisbane.

I don't deny that it was sometimes a rocky relationship, but my research revealed that it was far more complex - and affectionate - than many history books would have us believe.

I discovered that Dr Cooper arrived in Brisbane in 1891 not to a wall of prejudice, but rather to a vibrant, progressive environment, peopled with fascinating characters who welcomed thier first 'lady doctor' with open arms.

I hope you enjoy this research!
